Balance, Boost & Slim Out This Holiday Season
With Thanksgiving just a couple of days away, it’s safe to say that the holiday season is upon us. Characteristically a time that’s filled with joy, socialization and overindulgence, many healthy habits (including weight loss efforts) get put on the back burner from November until December.
Instead of waiting for a new year to “get back on track”, I encourage you to support health, happiness and wellness ALL year round. Here are a few easy habits to incorporate this holiday season:
Drink a mug of warm lemon water upon rising - warm lemon water is detoxifying, energizing, immune boosting, anti-aging, and appetite suppressing.
Support your liver and boost digestive enzymes (for less bloating and gas) by adding the juice from 1/2 lemon to a mug of warm (not hot!) filtered water and drinking it first thing in the morning (before coffee and breakfast).
Eat a power (protein-rich) breakfast - having a meal that contains 20-30g protein within 90 minutes of waking promotes blood sugar balance and hunger/craving control (especially later in the day).
I recommend passing on the cereals, bread products and pastries and opting for a collagen protein power -infused superfood smoothie, egg bites or omelet.
Move your body at least 20 minutes per day - exercise promotes blood circulation, thus oxygen delivery to the brain, lungs, heart and other tissues of the body. It also supports bowel regularity and a positive, uplifted mood.
Whether you go for a brisk walk outside, practice yoga or stretching, or hop on your Peloton, engaging in just 20 minutes of activity is all you need to boost energy and mood, and keep you motivated towards better choices (aka healthfully navigating that holiday buffet table).
Have a healthy snack before arriving at your event - arriving at an event hungry is a recipe for disaster. Not only will you feel the effects of adult beverages much more intensely, but the traditionally fried, fatty, salty and sugar-laden snacks will be much harder to pass up.
I recommend having raw veggies and hummus, turkey roll-ups, a handful or two of crunchy chickpeas, or a green protein drink before game time.
Take magnesium - categorized as Mother Nature’s natural calming mineral, magnesium is responsible for easing stress, supporting digestion, promoting bowel regularity and 700+ additional functions in the body.
If you tend towards constipation, I recommend taking 350-450mg magnesium citrate before bed. If you are more prone to loose stools, opt for magnesium glycinate (same dose, taken anytime in the day).
The holidays are associated with eating, drinking and being merry. Although I’m not a huge proponent of “dieting”, especially during this time of year, there are many things you can do to stay motivated and feeling your best, even when temptations are high.
