THIS Is The Best Time To Take Probiotics

In functional medicine, the gut microbiome is seen as the gateway to health. Interwoven with more than 100 million nerve cells and producing up to 90% of your feel-good brain chemicals, the gut is often referred to as the “second brain”. Playing a strong role in mood and mental health, the ecosystem in your gut (often referred to as the gut microbiome) also assists in digestion and the absorption of nutrients, weight management, hunger and cravings, modulating inflammation and SO much more!

Did you know that 70-80% of your immune system lies within your gut, aka the lining of your gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum? Given that we are 10 times more bacteria than human cells (and we have 50-100 trillion human cells, by the way), keeping the gut bacterial balance in check is ESSENTIAL to total body health.

Probiotics (good bacteria) are the number one supplement for gut health. Aiding digestion, weight loss and immunity, probiotics also ease depression, anxiety, ADD and ADHD. Often confused with digestive enzymes, probiotics are NOT the same and should be taken differently.

While digestive enzymes should be taken with meals (to assist in the digestive process), (most)* probiotics are best taken on an empty stomach so they can have time (away from food) to cultivate that good gut flora. I recommend taking at least 20 billion CFU of a multi-strain probiotic before bed (preferably at least 90 minutes after dinner). *Note: the one exception is spore-based probiotics–these function best when taken with, or after, a meal.
