3pm Cravings? You Must Try This!
Breakfast is arguably THE most important meal of the day, but it’s not just about WHAT you eat, it’s about WHEN!
I see so many people, especially women, opting for the seemingly “lighter” coffee n’ go approach. I’m here to tell you that this doesn’t work. In fact, not only does it not work, it may be THE very thing that’s sabotaging your weight loss efforts, mood, energy and mid-afternoon cravings. If this is you, I get it! You’re waking up exhausted and it only seems natural to reach for that cuppa Joe to get going.
Although coffee will certainly energize you in the moment, that “energy”, which results from the release of adrenaline, is typically short-lived. Produced in times of stress, adrenaline can be helpful for running from a predator or swerving from hitting a car; however, when you drive the stress pathways day-in and day-out, you deplete your resources and your adrenal glands take a major hit.
The adrenals are 2 tiny glands that sit atop each of your kidneys. While their primary function is to process and regulate ALL incoming stress, they also play a role in hormone production, fluid balance, blood pressure regulation, immunity and digestion. When the adrenals are tired, your energy tanks, the metabolism slows, cravings (especially for salt or sugar) increase and weight gain (especially around the midsection) is inevitable, despite your best efforts.
The BEST way to support your adrenals, which will help you fight those 3pm sugar cravings is to eat breakfast within ONE hour of rising! By eating a protein-packed breakfast, i.e. veggie omelette, egg bites or a superfood smoothie, within this window of time, you balance your blood sugar right off the bat. Stabilizing your blood sugar lowers stress within the body and allows the adrenals to relax.
If any of this resonates with you, I encourage you to give breakfast a try! I know that intermittent fasting is all the rage these days, and although it can be very beneficial, I don’t recommend long fasts to clients with adrenal issues.
