Probiotics For Gut Health, Weight & More

As a Nutritionist who sees many clients with digestive issues, autoimmune conditions and weight loss goals, probiotic supplements are a top recommendation in my practice. Typically associated with gut health and digestion, this live beneficial bacteria lining your gastrointestinal tract also fights inflammation, assists nutrient absorption, boosts immunity (as 70-80% of your immune system lies in your gut!) and mood (up to 90% of your feel-good serotonin is made in the gut), supports weight loss, reduces breakouts (bye bye acne!) and MORE.

Fun Fact: the human body is composed of 10 times MORE bacteria than human cells! And given that we have 50-100 trillion cells, that’s a LOT of bacteria…hate to break it to ya, but they’re running the show.

There are many food-based sources of PRObiotics: sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, miso, yogurt (that contains “live cultures”), kefir, tempeh and certain brands of pickles. There are also PREbiotic-rich foods such as asparagus, leeks, garlic, onions, green bananas and dark chocolate that act as food for probiotics to cultivate your good “gut flora” (in a gentler way).

The Problem: from Candida and SIBO to IBS, IBD and leaky gut, many of the clients I work with are struggling with varying degrees of gut “dysbiosis”, an imbalance in the gut microbiome that causes a LOT of digestive discomfort. Fermented foods are hard to tolerate for these individuals and often aggravate/worsen symptoms such as bloating, gas and acid reflux–yuck!

The Solution: probiotic supplementation! This is a supplement that benefits most people, if taken correctly (which most people don’t)! I recommend starting low and slow (with no more than 20 billion CFU), using a brand that contains at least 3-5 different strains and taking probiotics at night on an empty stomach (at least 2 hours after dinner) before bed. The supplement I’ve been using recently contains probiotics, prebiotics and other compounds that are great for digestion, detoxification (especially of GMO toxins) and healing leaky gut!
